Smooth Sailing

You’ve gotta love full service air travel..all the luxuries..even an air to ground ‘phone. Given the total stuff up with the ticket I thought I’d better ring Anne to check if I was safe to come home in a month or so. It could be a close run thing apparently…and I am only going to hear about it for the next few decades or longer. Probably fair.
Why does everyone make fun of accountants? Quote from a movie…admittedly talking to his mistress at the time… “I’m an accountant who wakes up every morning excited – have you any idea how rare that is for accountants?”
Air travel is a bit weird, quite apart from a fat cigar that can get off the ground there is a different time dimension..which manifests itself in having dinner at odd hours..4.30 in the afternoon..probably helping me acclimatise for Shady Meadows Retirement Home.
It’s been a while since I was at Bangkok airport..wandered off in the usual post long distance travel daze to be confronted with a sign telling me that it is only 500metres to the customs and immigration area..ok..maybe it’s a biggish terminal. (and useless information for the day..it was on a billboard so must be true..There are 500,000 people around the world in an aeroplane at any given time of the day)
Thongta Resort is possibly gilding the lily a bit..on a main road, 10 mins from the airport and a bit brick boxy but hey..it’s surrounded by restaurants, is close to the airport and costs next to nothing. A little disconcerting to be stared down by a rat in the middle of the drive as I was wandering out to get a celebratory beer. (I backed down and walked around it..having won the cojones contest hands down the rat ambled off).
There is still a huge amount of water all around Bangkok..the floods are still dissipating..strange seeing clusters of houses surrounded by water..and it’s not some exotic resort.
Snagged a window seat for the leg into Kathmandu..hopefully clear weather prevails..and luckily it did..note for next time though..best view flying north is from the right hand side of the ‘plane…but that’s OK as the airport was congested and we did about 5 fly arounds.
It is so weird flying along with 20,000ft registered as your altitude and seeing snow capped mountains at the same level. As we were doing the fly around passengers were moving from side to side to see the mountains. Luckily it seemed that the pilot was concentrating on the whole ‘flying the plane’  thing rather than checking the view.

OK..maybe just getting a little (over) excited now
